Flan un peu court et ovale, avec des types très bien centrés et de frappe vigoureuse. Très bel aspect avec un or de qualité

Obverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.

Obverse description : Croix formée de deux croissants et de quatre segments qui forment un angle droit ; divers éléments en cantonnement.

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.

Reverse description : Cheval bondissant à droite, une rouelle entre les jambes ; une victoire dégénérée au-dessus de la croupe et un astre devant le poitrail.

Commentary

Les statères de cette série ne sont vraiment pas communs ; c’est le premier que nous proposons à la vente pour cette variante précise. Cet exemplaire est de bien meilleure qualité que le n° 1487-1 du Van Arsdell. Il est issu des mêmes coins de droit et de revers que l’ABC 2442 indiqué “Big Whell Type”.

BRITTANY - CATUVELLAUNI

(1st century BC)

The Catuvellauni occupied the counties of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Huntingdonshire and Cambridge with parts of Essex, Oxfordshire and Suffolk. The Catuvellauni seem to have been a small military tribe dependent on the Atrebates and Regni. Cassivellaune was the leader of the Catuvellauni and organized the fight against the Romans in 54 BC. He treated with Caesar, agreed to pay an annual tribute and is cited in the Gallic Wars (V, 11, 18, 19, 20 , 21 and 22).
