Historical background

BRITISH INDIAN OCEAN TERRITORY

This territory is made up of the Archipelago of the Chagos Islands, the largest of which is Diego Garcia. Formerly dependent on Mauritius, the archipelago was detached from it in 1965. Between 1966 and 1963, the Chagossians were deported to facilitate the installation of the American military base of Diego Garcia.
