Commentary

Il faut noter que notre exemplaire, comme celui illustré par Corre, est rond alors que celui décrit par Feuardent est octogonal. Il y eut probablement deux émissions, l’octogone étant la première le coin étant prévu pour un flan octogone.
Si l’on en juge par la généalogie publiée sur wikipedia pour la famille Potier à http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novion notre personnage est Léon Potier, duc de Gesvres (1620-1704), premier gentilhomme de la chambre, gouverneur de Paris. Fils de René Potier, duc de Gesvres et de Marguerite de Piney-Luxembourg. Époux de Marie-Angélique de Fontenay-Mareuil (1632-1702), puis de Marie-Renée de Rommilley (-1742). En effet, au style, le jeton est du tout début du XVIIIe siècle.
Il se trouve aussi un Léon Potier de Gesvres (15 août 1656 à Paris, 12 novembre 1744 à Paris) qui fut camérier du pape Innocent XI. En 1694, il fut nommé archevêque de Bourges, mais il ne résida jamais dans cette ville. Il devint cardinal en 1719. Son of René Potier, Duke of Gesvres, and Marguerite de Piney-Luxembourg. Husband of Marie-Angélique de Fontenay-Mareuil (1632-1702), then of Marie-Renée de Rommilley (-1742). Indeed, based on its style, the token dates from the very beginning of the 18th century. There is also a Léon Potier de Gesvres (August 15, 1656 in Paris, November 12, 1744 in Paris) who was chamberlain to Pope Innocent XI.
