Historical background

BRITTANY - DUCHY OF BRITTANY - JOHN II

(1286-1305)

The appearance of the house of Dreux (1137-1341) is characterized by the presence of the triangular and then square coat of arms of Dreux in the free quarter of Brittany. John II (1239-1305) married Beatrice, daughter of Henry II of England. First rallied to Edward I before taking the side of Philip IV, he attached the lordship of Léon to the duchy in 1293 by buying it from his brother. In 1297 Brittany, a simple duchy, was elevated to a duchy-peerage. In 1299 John II took part in the peace negotiations between France and England. In 1304, he followed the King of France to Lyon, and died there in 1305, crushed by a wall.
