Obverse description : Le duc galopant à droite, avec un heaume couronné, en armure, brandissant une épée de la main droite et tenant un écu aux hermines de la gauche ; le caparaçon du cheval est orné d'hermines.

L'attribution du cavalier d'or à François Ier ou II n’est pas sans soulever quelques questions. D. Cariou, a tenté un essai de reclassement des pièces d'or des ducs François, SNBH. 1996, p.26-29. Le type de la classe II (auquel appartient cet exemplaire), est le plus récent et comprend deux variétés, l'une pour l'atelier de Rennes, le plus courant, la seconde pour l'atelier de Nantes qui n'a fabriqué que le second type, le plus rare.
