(since 1930)

Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira (1902-1976), President of the Republic from January 1956 to December 1960, succeeded Nereu de Oliveira Ramos and was succeeded, in January 1961, by Janio da Silva Quadros. President Kubitschek profoundly marked the history of contemporary Brazil by transferring the federal capital from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia on April 21, 1960. This city emerging from the jungle was to symbolize the Brazil of the 21st century and be the model of the modern city..
