Historical background

BRAZIL - MARIA I

(1777-1816)

Mary of Portugal succeeded Joseph I in 1777. Peter III, her husband, was associated with her until 1786, the date of his death. Mary reigned until 1805, but, in fact, Prince John was regent from 1799 and remained so until 1818.
