Historical background

BURGUNDY - DUCHY OF BOURGUNDY - HUGH III

(1162-1192)

Son of Eudes II and Marie de Champagne, Hugues III took the title of duke on the death of his father in 1162. However, too young to govern, he was placed under the guardianship of his mother. In 1171, Hugues III left for the Holy Land and founded the Sainte-Chapelle in Dijon. In 1174, he went to war against the Count of Nevers and was taken prisoner before being released. In 1186, Philippe Auguste came to Burgundy to put an end to the vexations that the duke inflicted on the churches. He left with Eudes, the eldest son of Hugues III. In 1190, Hugues III left for the Holy Land a second time alongside Philippe Auguste, leaving the administration of the duchy to his son Eudes. He died in Tire in 1192, and his son Eudes succeeded him at the head of the duchy under the name of Eudes III (1193-1218).
