Obverse description : Écu écartelé, aux 1 et 4 de Bourgogne moderne, au 2 mi-parti de Bourgogne ancien et de Brabant, au 3 mi-parti de Bourgogne ancien et de Limbourg, sur le tout de Flandre ; l’écu est sous un briquet et est accosté de deux croix de saint André.

BURGUNDY - Duchy of Burgundy - CHARLES THE BOLD

(15/06/1467-5/01/1477)

Charles (1433-1477) was the son of Philip the Good and Isabella of Portugal. He first married Catherine of France (1428-1446) in 1440, and Isabella of Bourbon in 1454, finally Margaret of York, sister of Edward IV in 1468. He succeeded his father 15 June 1467. Charles receiver Louis XI interview Peronne and accused of treason. King submits. Charles helps his brother Edward to regain his kingdom in 1471. He besieged Beauvais in July 1472 (heroic resistance Jeanne Huchette), but to raise the siege. It then attempts to recreate a kingdom of Lotharingia with the help of the Emperor Frederick III. It is a failure. Charles besieged unsuccessfully Cologne in 1475. He then throws on René II of Lorraine and took Nancy on September 30. Charles was defeated by the Swiss 21 June 1476 in Murten. Charles is killed in the siege Nancy January 5, 1477. His daughter Mary, born in 1457, succeeded him.
