Historical background

BOURBONNAIS - PRIORSHIP OF SOUVIGNY AND LORDS OF BOURBON - BEATRICE OF BURGUNDY AND ROBERT DE CLERMONT

(1272-1310)

Béatrice de Bourgogne succeeded Agnès de Dampierre, the sister of Mahaut II (1249-1262). Agnès had married Jean de Bourgogne, the brother of Eudes de Bourgogne, husband of Mahaut II. Béatrice married Robert de Clermont (1256-1317), sixth son of Louis IX and Marguerite de Provence. First Lord of Bourbon, he was created Duke of Bourbon. Louis I of Bourbon said the lame succeeded his mother, Béatrice had died in 1310. Louis de Clermont had lost his mind following a blow on the head received in a tournament, (cf. The Cursed Kings). Robert de Clermont is the ancestor of Henri IV.
