After Pharnaces was defeated at Zela in 47 BC and disappeared, Asander seized the throne after eliminating Mithridates of Pergamum. He married Pharnaces' daughter, Dynamis. He did not take the title of king, but contented himself with that of archon. He was recognized as king in 43 BC..
