Commentary

This type of right is very close to those of the so-called \\\"segment\\\" potin, whose attribution oscillates between the Bellovaques and the Aulerques Eburovices. This example, like that of the RN 1837, has the particularity of having the hair treated in a balled line. Contrary to the assumptions made in MONNAIES XV, this potin is present in the BN catalog, by Muret and Chabouillet

Historical background

BITURIGES CUBI / CARNUTES, UNSPECIFIED

(1st century BC)

The traditional attribution gives this badly known potin to the Bituriges Cubes while an attribution to the Carnutes is possible with regard to the places of discoveries. If the head resembles known coins, sometimes of distant inspiration (bellovaque or éburovices), the reverse remains enigmatic. We are certainly dealing with a local coinage, of "Pagus" as we say in our Celtic jargon, Simone Scheers going so far as to evoke a border coinage on the borders of the Bituriges and Carnutes countries. After the end of the war when Gaul was totally conquered, many substitution coins, of "necessity" appeared in order to replace or supplement the monetary circulation..
