Magnifique portrait sur un flan large et complet des deux côtés avec une extraordinaire patine de médaillier grise. Flan légèrement irrégulier. Revers de joli style

Obverse description : Tête diadémée du roi Nicomède II à droite.

Reverse description : Zeus nu jusqu’à la ceinture, barbu debout à gauche, tenant un sceptre long de main gauche et couronnant le nom de Nicomède de la main droite ; dans le champ à gauche, un petit aigle debout à gauche sur un foudre.

Commentary

Nouvelle combinaison de coins. Portrait stylisé. Émission très intéressante rendue par F. de Callataÿ à Socrate Chrestos demi-frère de Nicomède IV et usurpateur du trône de Bithynie, finalement éliminé par Mithridate VI Eupator du Pont.

(93-92 - 89-88 BC)

Nicomedes IV succeeded his father Nicomedes III. He had to face the usurpation of his half-brother Socrates Chrestos between 93-92 and 89-88 BC supported by Mithridates VI Eupator (120-63 BC). In reality, with the support of the Bithynians, Socrates Chrestos seized the throne twice, the second after the Pontic victory of Amnias in the summer of 89 BC which forced Nicomedes IV to flee and to go to Rome for help. Finally the usurper was eliminated in the fall of 88 BC by his protector.
