Historical background

BITHYNIA - KALCHEDON

(4th century BC)

Chalcedon, a Megarian colony, was founded in the 7th century BC on the Asian coast of the Propontis just opposite Byzantium. Following Cimon's campaign in Thrace, Chalcedon entered the Delian League and remained there until 413 BC. The city then came under Lacedaemonian rule. After the battle of Cnide in 394 BC, won by Conon, she opposed Sparta. After the Great King's Peace in 387 BC (Antalcidas), it came back under Persian domination before allying itself with Thebes in 364 BC. At the time of Alexander's invasion, the city remained loyal to Darius III and did not recognize Alexander until 330 BC..
