Commentary

This “once / today” coin was created in 1910. The today of that time was modern for the time. On this token, the Mint of Belgium is keeping up with the times not only for technology but also for women's liberation.

Historical background

BELGIUM - KINGDOM OF BELGIUM - ALBERT I

(17/12/1909-17/12/1934)

Albert I (8/04/1875-17/02/1934) succeeded his uncle Leopold II in 1909. He had married Elisabeth of Bavaria in 1900 (1876-1965). During the First World War, he commanded the Belgian army and shared the fate of the soldiers, which earned him the title of "knight king". The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 gave him the territories of Eupen and Malmédy. He died in a climbing accident in Marche-les-Dames. His son Leopold III succeeded him.
