Le 22 août 1853, Léopold épouse à Bruxelles Marie-Henriette de Habsbourg-Lorraine, archiduchesse d'Autriche et princesse palatine de Hongrie. Fraîche, vive, passionnée d'équitation au point de dispenser elle-même des soins aux chevaux, cette cousine de l'empereur François-Joseph Ier d'Autriche est la fille de Joseph, archiduc d'Autriche, qui était lui-même le fils de Léopold II, empereur romain germanique. D'aucuns ironiseront sur ce «mariage d'un palefrenier et d'une religieuse», la «religieuse» étant le timide et le renfermé Léopold.
Le couple, avant l'accession au trône de Léopold, a déjà trois enfants : Louise, née le 18 février 1858, Léopold, né le 12 juin 1859, et Stéphanie, née le 21 mai 1864..

Leopold II (9/04/1835-17/12/1909) is the eldest son of Leopold I and Louise d'Orléans. He married Marie-Henriette, Archduchess of Austria, who bore him three daughters: Louise, Stéphanie, and Clémentine. He relied on England to repel the aims of Napoleon III in 1866-1869. His reign was marked by the economic and industrial development of Belgium, which also became a great colonial power thanks to the personal annexation of the Congo by the king at the Congress of Berlin in 1885. Without a male heir, his nephew Albert I succeeded him. in 1909. He bequeathed the Congo to Belgium in 1908.
