Léopold Ier de Belgique (en néerlandais, Leopold I van België), prince de Saxe-Cobourg et Gotha, duc en Saxe, né prince Léopold Georges Christian Frédéric de Saxe-Cobourg-Saalfeld à Cobourg (en Saxe-Cobourg-Saalfeld) le 16 décembre 1790 et mort le 10 décembre 1865 au palais de Laeken (en Belgique), est un prince allemand de la maison de Saxe-Cobourg et Gotha devenu le premier roi des Belges.
Le Congrès belge qui le connaît pour son passé militaire (il s'est battu contre Napoléon), propose alors à Léopold de devenir roi des Belges. Le 4 juin 1831, Léopold est élu par 153 voix sur 196 votants. Il accepte à la condition que soient réglées les frontières et les dettes de la Belgique. Il obtient de la conférence de Londres le traité des XVIII articles, accepté par le congrès le 9 juillet 1831. Roi officiellement depuis le 26 juin 1831, c'est le 21 juillet suivant qu'il prête serment sur les marches de l'église Saint-Jacques-sur-Coudenberg de Bruxelles..
