Historical background

BELGIUM - KINGDOM OF BELGIUM - ALBERT I

(17/12/1909-17/12/1934)

Albert I (8/04/1875-17/02/1934) succeeded his uncle Leopold II in 1909. He had married Elisabeth of Bavaria in 1900 (1876-1965). During the First World War, he commanded the Belgian army and shared the fate of the soldiers, which earned him the title of "knight king". The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 gave him the territories of Eupen and Malmédy. He died in a climbing accident in Marche-les-Dames. His son Leopold III succeeded him.
