Commentary

Historical background

BELGIUM - THE KINGDOM OF BELGIUM - ALBERT I.

(17/12/1909-17/12/1934)

Albert I (8/04/1875-17/02/1934) succeeded his uncle Leopold II in 1909. He married Elisabeth of Bavaria in 1900 (1876-1965). During the First World War, he commanded the Belgian army and shared the fate of soldiers which earned him the title of "king knight". The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 gave him the territories of Eupen and Malmedy. He died in a climbing accident at Marche-les-Dames. His son Leopold III succeeded him.
