Commentary

The 2.50 franc denomination is rare. It goes hand in hand with a 25 franc gold coin. This coin was created following the law of March 31, 1847 and the decrees of April 9, 1847 and May 12 and 17, 1848. 2,721,413 coins were minted between 1848 and 1850. 43.30% of the coins were not officially remelted after the demonetization of the law of March 7, 1867. As an example, we can estimate the profit made by unofficial remeltings on 2.50 franc coins at 340,000 gold francs, which is enormous, at a time when the basic monthly salary was 180 gold francs. For 1848 and 1849, there are two varieties with the small and large head. The variety with the large head is much rarer.
