Historical background

BAVARIA - DUCHY OF BAVARIA - CHARLES-ALBERT

(1726-1744)

Charles Albert (6/08/1697-20/01/1745) is the son of Maximilien II (1679-1726) to whom he succeeded. On the death of Emperor Charles VI in 1740, he applied for his succession, under the name of Charles VII, against Marie-Thérèse of Austria and François of Lorraine. He was even crowned emperor in 1742. Allied with the French, he was finally defeated in 1745 by the troops of Maria Theresa who had occupied Bavaria in 1744. Charles-Albert died in 1745. His son Maximilian III recovered his duchy against recognition of Francis I as emperor.
