Commentary

The idea of founding a hospital to accommodate mutilated officers and soldiers preoccupied Henri IV and then Louis XIII, who enlarged the Château de Bicêtre for this purpose. Finally, Louis XIV assigned Bicêtre to civilian sick people, and ordered, in 1670, the foundation of a royal hotel \\\"for the housing, subsistence and maintenance of all the poor officers and soldiers of our troops who have been or will be crippled, or who, having grown old in their service, will no longer be able to render us service.\\\" The same year, on November 30, work began on the plans of Libéral Bruant. Jules-Hardouin Mansart was commissioned to enlarge the church from the center of which rises the dome.
