Obverse description : Buste du Christ Antiphonetes debout de face, avec le globe crucigère, vêtu du pallium et du colobium, bénissant de la main droite et tenant les Évangiles de la gauche.

Commentary


Poids très léger. Follis anonyme. Classe A2. Les Évangiles sont richement ornés. Le nimbe crucigère porte sur chaque bras un carré formé de cinq globules centrés. Motif floral visible de chaque côté au revers. Épigraphie élégante et raffinée. Importantes traces de surfrappe ou de double frappe au revers.
Very light weight. Anonymous Follis. Class A2. The Gospels are richly decorated. The cruciform nimbus bears on each arm a square formed by five centered globules. Floral motif visible on each side of the reverse. Elegant and refined epigraphy. Significant traces of over-striking or double-striking on the reverse

BASIL II and CONSTANTINE VIII

Basil II the Bulgaroctone was the greatest emperor of the Macedonian dynasty which died out with Theodora in 1056. Basil II was the son of Roman II and Theophano. He had been elevated to power by his father, still a child, in 960. He was associated with power during the successive reigns of Nicephorus II Phocas and John I. Constantin VIII, his brother, was subordinate to him throughout his reign and succeeded him in 1025 for only three years. Basil restored Byzantine authority in the Balkans and Asia Minor.
