Exemplaire sur un petit flan mince et irrégulier, bien centré des deux côtés. Très beau buste du Christ. Joli revers avec des lettres un peu grêles. Patine vert foncé

Obverse description : Buste du Christ Antiphonetes debout de face, avec le globe crucigère, vêtu du pallium et du colobium, bénissant de la main droite et tenant les Évangiles de la gauche.

Commentary


Poids très léger. Follis anonyme. Classe A2. Les Évangiles sont richement ornés de dix globules posés cinq par cinq en rectangle séparés par un trait. Le nimbe crucigère porte un carré formé de cinq globules centrés dans le bras gauche de la croix visible. Motif formé d’un oméga à l’exergue du revers au-dessous de la légende. Cassure de coin visible au droit partant du visage jusqu’au vêtement.
Very light weight. Anonymous Follis. Class A2. The Gospels are richly decorated with ten globules placed five by five in a rectangle separated by a line. The cruciform nimbus bears a square formed of five globules centered in the left arm of the visible cross. Motif formed by an omega in the exergue of the reverse below the legend. Visible corner break on the right running from the face to the garment

BASIL II and CONSTANTINE VIII

Basil II the Bulgaroctone was the greatest emperor of the Macedonian dynasty which died out with Theodora in 1056. Basil II was the son of Roman II and Theophano. He had been elevated to power by his father, still a child, in 960. He was associated with power during the successive reigns of Nicephorus II Phocas and John I. Constantin VIII, his brother, was subordinate to him throughout his reign and succeeded him in 1025 for only three years. Basil restored Byzantine authority in the Balkans and Asia Minor.
