Obverse description : Buste du Christ Antiphonetes debout de face, avec le globe crucigère, vêtu du pallium et du colobium, bénissant de la main droite et tenant les Évangiles de la gauche.

Commentary


Follis anonyme. Classe A3. Les Évangiles sont richement ornés de dix globules posés cinq par cinq en rectangle séparés par un trait. Le nimbe crucigère porte un carré formé de cinq globules centrés dans le bras gauche de la croix visible. Motif formé d’un oméga à l’exergue du revers au-dessous de la légende.
Follis anonymous. Class A3. The Gospels are richly decorated with ten globules placed five by five in a rectangle separated by a line. The crucigerous nimbus bears a square formed of five globules centered in the left arm of the visible cross. Pattern formed by an omega on the reverse below the legend

BASIL II and CONSTANTINE VIII

Basil II the Bulgaroctone was the greatest emperor of the Macedonian dynasty which died out with Theodora in 1056. Basil II was the son of Roman II and Theophano. He had been elevated to power by his father, still a child, in 960. He was associated with power during the successive reigns of Nicephorus II Phocas and John I. Constantin VIII, his brother, was subordinate to him throughout his reign and succeeded him in 1025 for only three years. Basil restored Byzantine authority in the Balkans and Asia Minor.
