Historical background

Auxerre - Auxerre COUNTY - ANONYMOUS

(Tenth to twelfth centuries)

The coinage of Auxerre began after the edict of Pistres in 864. At the end of the tenth century, we have Eudes de Champagne coins with the names of the cities of Sens and Auxerre. In 1076, William I (1040-1097) gave the county to his son, Robert, bishop of Auxerre. In 1089, William II (1089-1147) reunites the two counties. William III (1147-1161) succeeded him. William IV brings the counties of Auxerre, Nevers and Tonnerre.
