Historical background

AUSTRIA - SIEGE OF VIENNA

The Ottoman Empire experienced with Suleiman the Magnificent a great period of expansion, especially in Europe. In 1521 he took Belgrade; in 1522 he seized Rhodes, continuing his conquests in Hungary, he killed Louis of Hungary at Mohacs in 1526. He seized the same year of Buda (current Budapest) and laid siege to Vienna in 1529. The Ottomans attacked Charles V on several fronts, particularly in the Mediterranean. In 1535, the emperor succeeded in seizing Tunis; the expedition against Algiers in 1541 was however disastrous. In 1536, the king of France, François Ier passed an alliance with Soliman to fight against Charles V, his greatest rival in Europe.
