Historical background

AUSTRIA - TYROLEAN REBELLION - ANDREAS HOFER

(1809)

One of the cradles of the Habsburg family, Tyrol was to be ceded to Bavaria by the Treaty of Pressburg (1805). In 1809, an innkeeper, Andreas Hofer (1767-1810), a former soldier, raised the Tyrol against the Bavarian and French yoke. He defeated the Bavarians at Mount Isel (May 29, 1809) and Marshal Lefebvre (August 13, 1809). Poorly supported by Francis I of Austria, he had to flee into the mountains and was betrayed. Arrested and taken to Mantua, shot on February 20, 1810, he remains today the national hero of Tyrol.
