Max Gandolphe succeeded Guidobal de Thun et de Hohenstein, who died on June 1, 1668 after a sixty-day vacation. His episcopate was one of the longest of the 18th century. On his death in 1687, Jean-Ernest de Thun et de Hohenstein succeeded him after a vacancy of the seat of 58 days.
