Historical background

AUSTRIA - RUDOLF II OF HABSBURG

(1576-1612)

Rudolf II, son of Emperor Maximilian II, was crowned King of Hungary in 1572 and King of Bohemia in 1575. On October 27, 1575, he was elected and crowned King of Germania. His brother Matthias succeeded in obtaining the government of Austria, Hungary and Moravia in 1608 and, in 1611, he caused the deposition of Rudolf to be pronounced by the States of Bohemia. He was elected king the same year. The reign of Rodolphe II was marked by an active protection of Catholics and Jesuits; at the end of his reign, however, he ensured freedom of worship for Protestants. He died in Prague on January 20, 1612.
