Commentary


Le Souverain est une monnaie introduite en 1489 par Henri VII d’Angleterre. La production a cessée en 1604 au profit des “Laurel”, “Unite” et Guinée. La forme actuelle a été réintroduite en 1817 avec le célèbre revers à l’effigie de St Georges du graveur Benedetto Pistrucci.
On estimait que la durée de vie d’une monnaie de circulation était 15 ans.
En 1891, les monnaies frappées avant 1837 ont été rappelées pour échange. Avec l’or collecté, ont été frappées 13.680.486 demi-souverains en 1892 et 10.846.741 en 1900.

Victoria I (1819-1901) was the daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent, and Victoria of Saxe Coburg. She succeeded her uncle William IV in 1837 and married Albert, Prince of Saxe Coburg Gotha (1819-1861), in 1840. She was the grandmother of noble Europe.
