Commentary

The Sydney Mint operated from 1855 to 1926 following the discovery of gold in Australia. The mint building, erected in 1811, is the oldest building in Australia. This type was minted between 1857 and 1870 in Sydney, thanks to the discovery of Australian gold mines from 1851 in New South Wales and 1852 in Victoria, which, like in California three years earlier, led to a massive influx of immigrants.
