Historical background

AUGUSTUS and JULIA

(13 BC)

Julie is the only daughter of Auguste and his second wife Scribonia, daughter of Lucius Scribonius Libo. She was born in 39 BC when her parents separated and Augustus married Livia. When she was only two years old, she was engaged to Antyllus, son of Marc Antoine and Fulvie. She first married Marcellus, her cousin in 25 BC. The latter died two years later. She then married Agrippa, Augustus' main collaborator, in 21 BC. They had five children. Unfortunately, Agrippa died in 13 BC. She then married Tiberius, Livia's second son, in 11 BC. But the new spouses did not get along. Finally, faced with the excesses and the licentious life of his daughter, Augustus banishes her first to the island of Pandateria then to Rhegium where her mother is authorized to join her. She died at the beginning of the reign of Tiberius, perhaps assassinated, at the instigation of her husband..
