Historical background

AUGUSTUS, JULIA, CAIUS and LUCIUS

(13 BC)

Caius and Lucius, born in 20 and 17 BC, were the children of Agrippa (+ 12 BC) and Julie, the grandsons of Augustus who had adopted them into the gens Julia. Augustus had supervised their education and destined them for the Empire. They received the titles of "prince of youth" and "caesar" as well as the manly toga. They were designated consuls and were to succeed their grandfather. Unfortunately, Lucius died in 2 CE in Marseilles and his brother in 4 CE in Limyra in Lycia. They never ruled. Augustus suffered greatly. His wife Livia was accused of having murdered them to offer the succession to Tiberius (according to Suetonius). As for Julie, accused of conspiracy and adultery, she was relegated to the island of Pandateria, then to Rhegium. She died, possibly assassinated, at the beginning of the principality of Tiberius.
