Historical background

AUGUSTUS and CAIUS

Caius was born in 20 BC. Son of Julie and Agrippa and grandson of Augustus, he was adopted by the latter in 17 BC with his brother born the same year. In 5 BC, the eldest Caius received the toga, "toga virilis", at the age of only fifteen. He was then admitted to the Senate and received with his brother the title of "Principes Iuventutis", princes of youth. In 1 BC, he married Liville, daughter of Nero Drusus and Antonia. He takes the consulship in 1 AD and is sent to the East on a tour of inspection. Seriously wounded at the siege of Artagira (2 AD), he died in 4 AD at Limyra (Lycia) as a result of his wounds.
