Historical background

AUGUSTUS

(16/1/27 BC - 19/8/14 AD)

Hispania - Tarraconensis, Caesaraugusta, Saragossa

The colony of Cæsaraugusta was founded by Augustus and established on the Ebro near the Celtiberian oppidum of Salduba with contingents of veterans from the fourth, sixth and tenth legions. Imperial coinage would not begin until 19-18 AC. For the coins of the city, the beginning of the manufacture can be between 25 and 15 AC. The coinage of Zaragoza is the most important of the reign of Augustus. For this reign, the authors of the Roman Provincial Coinage have isolated nine different emissions.
