Historical background

ATTICA - ATHENS

(3rd - 1st century BC)

Athens after the death of Alexander the Great tried to regain its independence. The Athenians were defeated at Crannon in 322 BC. Demosthenes committed suicide so as not to be delivered to Antipater. She followed the fate of Macedonia until the defeat of Perseus in 168 BC. During the war against Mithridates, Sulla besieged the city which surrendered in 86 BC..
