Historical background

ATTILA

A very large number of these solidi were discovered in the Szikancs hoard in 1975 which, out of 1,439 pieces, contained 1,405 solidi of Theodosius II. Several hypotheses were put forward on the occasion of this discovery, namely that this treasure could be part of the war chest of Attila who received a tribute from the emperor of the East so as not to invade the region. Normally minted in Constantinople, these solidi do not always bear the mark CONOB, but COMOB, no more than a letter of dispensary, which suggests that these coins were struck in a special workshop and only on this occasion..
