Historical background

ATREBATES / REGNI

(1st century BC)

Part of the Atrebates emigrated from the Continent and came to settle in Brittany in the 2nd century BC. With the Regni, they formed a politico-economic whole. They occupied the territories placed south of the Thames in the counties of Hampshire, Sussex and Berkshire. They were the first to mint coins on the island. In 57 BC, Commios, king of the continental Atrebates, was sent to Britain by Caesar to prepare for the invasion of the island of Britain. Eventually, Commios ends up becoming king of the island Atrebates at the end of the Gallic Wars.
