Intéressant denier, sur un flan court et épais avec un avers très simple et complet, mais un revers partiellement hors flan. Fine patine grise, avec des reste de concrétion terreuses dans les creux

Commentary


Ce denier correspond exactement au Belfort 5681 décrit comme ayant le monogramme BLB. Ce type est à mettre en relation avec le B. 6686 (qui porte une légende complémentaire).
Selon le MONETA, seulement deux exemplaires de ce type ont été étudiés. Les auteurs citent le n° 154 du trésor de Plassac, étudié par J. Lafaurie dans le RN. 1969.
This coin corresponds exactly to Belfort 5681 described as having the monogram BLB. This type is to be related to B. 6686 (which bears a complementary legend). According to MONETA, only two examples of this type have been studied. The authors cite No. 154 of the Plassac treasure, studied by J. Lafaurie in the RN. 1969

Many Merovingian coins, badly minted, with very poor or inexplicit epigraphy, cannot be attributed to a particular mint. Too rare coins unfortunately have the same problem. The attributions being based on often old works, a coin unknown at the time will often have difficulty in being attributed, unless it is possible to read the mint or find the name of the mint and compare with its production in the workshops where he minted coins....
