Commentary
Louis Charles de Bourbon, comte d'Eu, duc d'Aumale (1736), prince de Dombes (1755-1762), duc de Gisors (1762), comte de Dreux, prince d'Anet, baron de Sceaux est né au château de Sceaux le 15 octobre 1701 et mort au même endroit le 13 juillet 1775.
Fils du duc du Maine, bâtard légitimé de Louis XIV et de son épouse Anne-Louise Bénédicte de Bourbon-Condé, il demeura célibataire et n'eut pas d'enfant.
Il fut grand maître de l'artillerie de France du décès de son père (1736) à 1755.
Au décès de son frère aîné le prince de Dombes (1755), il devint colonel général des Suisses et Grisons (jusqu'en 1762), gouverneur du Languedoc et il hérita ses propriétés, notamment le château d'Anet où il fit de fréquents séjours et où il s'adonnait à sa passion pour la chasse. Même âgé, il continuait à la suivre dans une petite voiture à roulettes.
Le 28 mars 1762, il échangea avec Louis XV la principauté de Dombes contre le duché de Gisors et les terres de Gretz-Armainvilliers et de Pontcarré.
Apprécié du peuple pour sa générosité, il céda la plupart de ses propriétés – le duché d'Aumale, le comté d'Eu, la principauté d'Anet notamment – à Louis XV en 1773 pour la somme de 12 millions de livres. Mais la transaction qui n'avait pas été terminée lorsque le roi mourut, fut annulée par Louis XVI. Lorsque le comte d'Eu mourut en 1775, son cousin le duc de Penthièvre hérita tous ses biens. Il est inhumé dans l'église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Sceaux.

Historical background
ARTILLERY
Before Louvois, the artillery was entrusted to civilian contractors who provided the men and equipment for each gun in battery for a given price. It came under a grand master of the artillery, a charge created under Charles VII, which belonged to Sully from 1599 to 1610 or to the Duke of Meilleraye under Richelieu. With Louvois, the artillery became an integral part of the army and was protected by the regiment of the king's riflemen. Ranks in the artillery were more accessible to commoners than in other regiments, advancement was given on merits and talents. Until the 18th century, the equipment left much to be desired with different calibers, different carriages and different wheels. The standardization and modernity of artillery will owe much to J.-B. de Gribeauval, Inspector General of Artillery since 1776. At the end of the 18th century, French artillery will be the first in Europe and this superiority will explain the victories of the Revolution.
