Commentary

The most common medal of René Riberon is probably that of the newspaper “Le Matin”.

It was on May 25, 1810, that Buenos Aires gained its independence, while Spain was in the middle of a war (Spanish Civil War of 1808-1813): after a week of mostly peaceful demonstrations, the criollos (Spaniards born in South America) managed to drive out the Spanish viceroy and install a provincial government.. Fearing that the popularity of Liniers, who had remained loyal to the King of Spain, would be an obstacle to the continuation of the revolution, they had him arrested and shot without trial..
The May Revolution is celebrated in Argentina today, and May 25th is a public holiday.. At the end of the conflicts that shook the entire country and led to its unification, Buenos Aires was also chosen as the seat of the national government.. However, independence was not formally declared until 1816..

José Figueroa Alcorta (Córdoba, November 20, 1860 - Buenos Aires, December 27, 1931) was an Argentine lawyer and politician, Vice President of the Nation (1904-1906), President of Argentina (1906-1910) and President of the Supreme Court of Argentina, from 1915 until his death in 1931.
Manuel José Guerrico Güiraldes (Buenos Aires, January 19, 1857 - San Antonio de Areco, September 24, 1941) was an Argentine landowner and civil servant.. He became mayor of Buenos Aires between 1908 and 1910; during his term he led the celebrations of the centenary of the May Revolution.

Historical background

ARGENTINA - ARGENTINE REPUBLIC

(since 1810)

Discovered in 1516 by Diaz de Solis, the Rio de Plata region was colonized during the 16th century. Buenos Aires was founded in 1580. In 1810, a revolutionary junta deposed the Spanish viceroy and independence was proclaimed in 1816, after a bloody war. The country developed in the second half of the 19th century, particularly in the economy, transport and public education. The country knows crises, a bankruptcy in 1890 and especially the crisis of 1929 which is hard felt. The 1943 putsch enabled Juan Peron to seize power and establish a Mussolinian-type dictatorship. He was overthrown in 1955 by a military junta and the country then experienced an alternation of elections and coups which culminated in 1982 with the failure of the landing in the Falkland archipelago (or Falklands). Since then, the country has experienced a slow democratization with the elections of Carlos Menem in 1989 and 1995. Since 2001, the country has been governed by President Fernando de La Rua.
