Historical background

ARDENNES - ROCROI

On a high plateau and surrounded by the Ardennes forest, the town of Rocroi was fortified by François I and then by Louis XIII. The Duke of Enghien (future Grand Condé) won between this city and the village of Maubert-Fontaine a famous victory over the Spaniards on May 18 and 19, 1643. Commanded by don Francisco de Mello, the 26,000 Spaniards were beaten by this young commander twenty-three years old, nephew by marriage of Richelieu. After fierce resistance, the tercios were annihilated and lost 15,000 men and their artillery. With a considerable impact, the victory of Rocroi put an end to the reputation of invincibility of the Spanish infantry. Passed to Spain during the Fronde des Princes, Condé besieged and took the city in 1653. It remained Spanish until the Peace of the Pyrenees in 1659.
