(1414-1463)

The bishopric of Cologne was raised to the rank of archbishopric by Charlemagne in 785. It was Otto I, king of Germania, who granted monetary rights to the archbishops and who declared Cologne a free city. In 1357 the archbishops of Cologne became electors.
