Historical background

ARCADIUS

(19/01/383-1/05/408)

Arcadius was born in 377. Proclaimed by his august father, 19 January 383, he received the East inheritance after the death of Theodosius. The Emperor, low, left Rufin govern the prefect of the praetorium and Eutropius, a eunuch of the palace. The Empress Eudoxia had a considerable influence on the emperor and military power was in the hands of Gainas a Goth. In 402, Arcadius associated his son, Theodosius II, born the previous year and a quarrel ensued with Honorius. Arcadius died in 408, aged 30.
