Commentary


Cette pièce a les caractéristiques de poids et de métal des "souverains" anglais. Les différents corne d'abondance de la Régie des Monnaies et l'aile de Lucien Bazor, graveur général de 1930 à 1958, témoignent en revanche de la fabrication française de cette monnaie.

SAUDI ARABIA - ABDULAZIZ IBN SAUD

(AH1344-1373/ 1926-1953)

Abd Al Aziz Ibn Saud (1882-1953), king in 1902, had 14 official wives, 44 legitimate sons, 200 concubines and 100 natural sons. A refugee in Kuwait, he took over Nadj between 1902 and 1912 and occupied Riyadh. He took Medina and Mecca in 1924. He unified Nadj and Hejaz and founded the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. The first oil concession was granted in 1933 to Standard Oil (Esso). He organized a modern kingdom and created the first Saudi coins and banknotes in 1950. He died in 1953.
