Historical background

AQUITAINE - BOURGES - COINAGE IMMOBILIZED IN THE NAME OF CHARLES THE BALD EMPEROR

(875-887)

The first Carolingian coins from Bourges were minted in the name of Charlemagne. The workshop was active under Louis the Pious, Pepin I, King of Aquitaine, Charles the Bald, Eudes, Louis IV and finally Lothaire who all left their names on the coins of Bourges. The coins of this workshop and in the name of Charles the Bald bearing the title of emperor (876-877) seem to have been minted at least ten years after his death. We know indeed coins of Bourges in the name of Eudes who began to reign in 888.
