Historical background

APULIA - RUBI

(3rd century BC)

Rubi, the modern Ruvo di Puglia in the province of Bari has been known since ancient times. It was located halfway between Canusium and Barium about ten kilometers from the Adriatic Sea. The city took off in the 6th century BC linked to the import trade of ceramics and black-figure vases, then Corinthian and Attic red-figure vases. This economic expansion lasted for more than two centuries. The city was victim of the conflict which opposed Greeks of Southern Italy and Romans from the beginning of the 3rd century BC. Finally, the cities of Brindes (Brindisi) and Barium (Bari) supplanted Rubi.
