Commentary

Historical background

APULIA - BUTUNTUM

(3rd century BC)

We only have fragmentary information on this city founded by the Peucetians, an Italic tribe of Messapiens. Cited by Pliny the Elder (HN. III. 105) as part of Calabria, the city is placed in the table of Peutinger between Rubri and Barium, not far from the Adriatic Sea.
