Commentary

For this type, Mr. Crawford noted an estimate of less than ten dies for the obverse and less than twelve dies for the reverse for two varieties. On the reverse, on our example, we have a C, placed under the horses of the quadriga. This type is in fact infinitely rarer than some reference catalogs suggest and corresponds to the estimate given by D. Sear (RCV. 195). For this type, Mr. Crawford does not list any examples reported in the hoards

Historical background

APPULEIA

(104 BC)

The Appuleian gens is of plebeian origin. Lucius Appuleius Saturninus was quaestor in 104 BC, then twice tribune of the plebs in 103 and 100 BC. Supporter of Marius and demagogue, he was assassinated by the patricians, who brought down the roof of the Curia on him before his discharge.
